Parang
“Parang” is Malay word and it carries a meaning of knife in Malaysia. This is an important tool in a survey team.
I did follow an experience surveyor on past few weeks ago and gained an important knowledge regarding “parang” in field.
According to this senior surveyor, the function of survey labour is no only carry the tripod and does the setting. Survey labor should always carry a “parang” with him while he walks in front. A good survey labour will clean all the obstruction to enable the surveyor do the observation. The advantage is save time and energy. Work in jungle, estate or rural area, you cannot afford to walk up and down and you will be exhausted very fast before you can get your work done.
Survey labor should be very smart in choosing a direction; he plays an important role while we are traversing. This person we greet him as mandore (the head). He should avoid slashing in field. The moment he sees there will be slashing activity then he must immediate find an alternative way to traverse. Thus, “parang” is no a tool for you to slash in field if you can avoid.
A quality “parang” should daily sharpening before start work. Now I can recall back why the Dayak workers will sharpen their “parang” before I start work.
Sharpening “parang” also needs a skill and normally the “parang” tip is very sharp. Some workers are able to cut their nail with this sharp tip “parang”. The objective of having sharp tip is to get wood for making a stesen. You do not need to find a tree and chop the tree down to get a picket.
This experience surveyor had been involved in jungle survey for quite long. He told me that why some surveyor in Malaysia can easily lost in jungle. This is because their workers do not practice using their “parang” in jungle. If you workers slashing all the way while traverse, you are able to see the track and you must always do marking when you stop at a stesen. Never trust your compass because when you are panic, compass cannot assist you.
After I followed this experience surveyor, I just realize that the important of “parang” in survey life.
